Visit to the TWAS Secretariat of The World Academy of Sciences for Developing Countries (UNESCO-TWAS) in Trieste, Italy
At the invitation ofProfessor Marcelo Knobel, Executive Director of The World Academy of Sciences for Developing Countries (UNESCO-TWAS), Prof.Yanping ZHANG, Director of the CAS-TWAS Centre of Excellence forBiotechnology (CoEBio), and Ms.Liu HE, Programme Manager of the Centre, visited the TWAS Secretariat in Trieste, Italy in November 2025.
On 24th November 2025,comprising representatives from the CAS Bureau of International Cooperation andthe members ofthe six CAS-TWAS Centres of Excellence (CoEs) andCAS-TWAS the Sustainable DevelopmentNetwork, participated in two-days high-level working meeting at TWAS headquarters in Trieste. The meeting showcased 12 years of landmark achievements by the CoEs in climate modelling, green technologies, biotechnology, infectious disease control, space disaster reduction, and water security. Additionally, multiple consensuses were reached on issues including the joint action plan for 2026-2027, resource sharing, youth talent cultivation, and promoting scientific and technological development in the Global South countries. Prof. Yanping ZHANG and Ms. Liu HE presented a work report on the CoEBio, proposed recommendations for future collaboration, and explored new partnership opportunities.


The visit strengthened mutual understanding and trust between the CoEBio and TWAS, solidifying a foundation for long-term international cooperation and enhancing the Centre’s global influence. Both sides agreed to strengthen practical cooperation in research, talent development, and technology transfer to advance science and technology in the Global South.
